Sean Scully 1970
Sean Scully 1970
Revolutionizing abstract painting with his grid systems of intersecting bands and lines, Sean Scully is widely regarded as the master of post-minimalist abstraction. In this retrospective exhibition, Scully revisits his early works from 1969 to 1974. It is the first time they have come together since Scully's Newcastle University degree show in 1971. They demonstrate the remarkable confidence of his work at the earliest stage of his career, and reveal the beginnings of Sean's continued fascination with stripes and the spaces in between.0In addition to his paintings, the exhibition presents a selection of Scully's college and university sketches, from 1967-1969. Inspired by his surroundings, including the structure of the Tyne Bridge, the sketches still inspire Scully today.
