Francis Bacon's Studio—From 7 Reece Mews to the Hugh Lane
Discover one of the most extraordinary artist spaces ever preserved—Francis Bacon’s original studio, relocated from 7 Reece Mews in London to the Hugh Lane Gallery in Dublin.
A Studio Like No Other
Behind the door of a modest London mews house, Bacon created a universe of visual chaos. His studio was packed floor-to-ceiling with:
-
Torn photographs
-
Dusty books and mirrors
-
Slashed canvases
-
Spilled paint and splattered walls
This creative mess was no accident — it was part of his process.
A Radical Preservation
In 1998, the entire studio—every paintbrush, scrap, and splinter—was moved piece by piece to the Hugh Lane Gallery. Over 7,000 items were catalogued in one of the most ambitious cultural preservation projects of its time.
Now, visitors can walk through the exact same space, perfectly reconstructed, and get a rare glimpse into Bacon’s mind and methods.
